Readers of a certain age may remember when children's TV consisted of Watch With Mother on the BBC after the lunchtime news or Rainbow etc on the other side. Then there would be an afternoon film or two that lasted until school finished. When the TV was ours again! Until 5:40pm when the evening news started.
Five minutes before the news, there was a short cartoon There was Ludwig, a magical gemstone that lived in a forest. Willo the Wisp, a blue floating creature. The Magic Roundabout and The Wombles ... (I'll stop now)
Smallfilms was the name given to the partnership of Oliver Postgate (writer, animator and narrator) and Peter Firmin (modelmaker and illustrator). They made television programmes for children from 1959 to the 1980s.
The Clangers, the adventures of a family of mice-like creatures who lived on a small, blue planet with their friends the Soup Dragon and the Froglets.
Bagpuss, "A saggy, old cloth cat, baggy, and a bit loose at the seams" belonging to Emily.
They were shared with the Tubblet when she was small. There's something special about passing a piece of your childhood onto the next generation. But not without risk. They may hate it. Fortunately, the Tubblet didn't. (I'm not big on parenting advice, but if you think them not liking it will really upset you, it might be better to leave well alone).
The V&A Museum of Childhood had a tiny exhibition of props from Smallfilms a few months ago so off we went.
The Museum is absolutely fascinating. It has children's toys and clothes from all centuries. You're bound to recognise something you played with or wore. It's a great conversation starter. Yes, I did wear a purple cord dresses with a floral pattern purchased from Tammy Girl. With blue plastic shoes and lacy tights. I thought I looked marvellous. It was the 70's. (Enough said).
Hope you enjoy the photos:
What a gorgeous little exhibition, I used to work at the V&A which the Museum of Childhood is part of and so it really brought back some lovely memories seeing this as well as lovely Bagpuss. Thanks so much for linking up to #coolmumclub x
ReplyDeleteIt was really lovely and seeing the real Bagpuss was awesome! Glad I bought back some lovely memories for you :)
DeleteI bought a couple of DVDs of classic children's programs and shared them with my boys they loved them when they were younger. I loved Charlton and the Wheelies. The exhibition looked fab! Thank you for linking up to #ablogginggoodtime 🎉
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting. I'm glad your children liked the things you shared. I tried a few books as well but the Tubblet said those were boring. Ah well!
DeleteThis looks lovely. I don't my daughter has any interest in anything I liked growing up, such a shame. I can't remember what this show was called but it was something to do with bears and a railway line? Like the railway gang of something? #PoCoLo
ReplyDeleteRacking my brain and I can't remember that one at all!
DeleteWhat a great exhibition, looks fab. I don't remember anything from when I was really little but from around 7/8 onwards I used to love Count Duckula, Cities of Gold, the Ragdolls and Danger Mouse. We bought the box set of Cities of Gold for my son a couple of years ago and he loved it, he's watched quite a few Count Duckula's on YouTube too. Love a trip down memory lane x

We loved those too! Thanks for reminding me
DeleteButton Moon was a fave and Fraggle Rock. Also Postman Pat! I should stop now or I will be here all day! I don't like the revamped Postman Pat, he has ideas above his station now he is "special service". My two are loving the new Clangers though. #FridayFrolics
ReplyDeleteThe new Clangers is fab! I really liked it. The less said about the new versions of Magic Roundabout the better!
DeleteMy kids and I love watching the Clangers, the Soup Dragon and a few Froglets. I think it is a brillant show. I don't watch much cartoons when I was a kid as I was brought up in a boarding school. So when ever I watch TV was mostly news, soaps (Neighbours & Home and Away) & drama such as The Priory. I love your visit to V&A. I missed London. I love hanging out at V&A. It is very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your lovely visit with us on #FabFridayPost x
The V&A is a bit of a way for us, but it was worth the trip. I love poking around there. Thank you for hosting each week
DeleteApparently I loved Bagpuss when I was little (which is a bit odd as I'm well past the age when it would have been on TV! My mum must have been sharing her childhood favourites). We love the revamped Clangers though - I don't think it's lost any of its appeal. Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove
ReplyDeleteRe-runs! They showed them for years :) The new Clangers series is fab. I really enjoyed it.
DeleteOh we used to love Bagpuss. My brother age 3 used to recite the whole introduction piece. #sharingthebloglove
ReplyDeleteI used to be able to say it all too, now it gets a mumbly after "big furry cat puss ..." .
DeleteOh my, I love all of these - I have to go to this museum. I have a book of children's tv programmes - not a small film but Wacky Races was a big time favourite. Magic Roundabout a big favourite too, I've had pets called Dylan and Dougal... but my brother refused to watch it in black and white! Thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo
ReplyDeleteThis exhibition isn't there any more, but there's loads of other good stuff. The Tubblet's face when we showed her Gameboys etc was priceless! I loved Wacky Races as well. They still show that on the cartoon channel in the evenings occasionally
DeleteI remember Rainbow! Wow that takes me back. My boys weren't interested in the shows I enjoyed, apart from one... Trap Door. Loved reading this, thanks for sharing?
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to #pocolo
(Sorry for the epically late comment!)
I loved Rainbow, it was great :) I remember Trap Door as well. So strange ... Must see if it's on YouTube. Thanks for the reminder!
