I love reading about makeup, skincare and beauty products. I like knowing what's available for purchase. Even if I have no intention of purchasing it ever.
I want to understand ingredients and the science bit as that is an indication of whether or not a product might work for me if I purchased it.
I like seeing what other people think of products. Just because. Even if I suspect they're making it all up in the hope of flogging me some over priced, essential oil-filled lard.
I try and sort the wheat from the chaff. There are blogs I read just because and then there are blogs that I take notice of. Here are a few of my reliable sources of information:
Pretty Honest - Sali Hughes
Most beauty books are light on information and picture heavy. This is the opposite. This has everything you need to know about the subject of beauty. From taking good care of your skin to using makeup to carry you through the best and worst of times via what ingredients actually do. And what they don't.
Written in a no nonsense, down to earth style, without trying to sell you anything. Hughes occasionally says, "I like blah blah for this ..." and I think, "Well I do / don't" and carry on reading.
I dip into this regularly when I want to know something or am looking for ideas for a beauty post. And I can read it on my Kindle. Hughes has her own blog and a regular column in The Guardian. (I rarely read those).
Beauty Blogs
Beauty blogs are as much a part of the product marketing machine as ads, counters etc. I trust Haley at London Beauty Queen and Jane at British Beauty Blogger as they review products - from the cheapest to the most expensive - honestly. They also tell you if it's a PR sample, paid content or something they've bought themselves. They've saved me quite a bit of money over the years by helping me find cheaper, better alternatives to some of the more expensive things I used to buy. Whilst enabling me to spend some of the money saved on more expensive things. (Not entirely the plan!)
I also love ParisB over at My Woman Stuff. Whilst she only features premium products, her writing is amazing, her post titles never fail to make me smile and she seems like a lovely person. I don't think you can fake it online. Your real self always leaks out eventually. She also has the best bags.
Got any beauty reading recommendations? Let me know in the comments. After culling my bloglovin' feed, there are gaps waiting to be filled.
Sharing with all these great Linkys
I haven't read too many beauty blogs for the same reason you mentioned above about not knowing how truthful a review is but it's nice to know you've found people who are honest and give options of cheaper v. more expensive products. I'll need to check them out as I fear I spend too much money on makeup to see what works and what doesn't. Thanks for the info! #sharewithme
ReplyDeleteI know the top end beauty bloggers need to work with brands to keep up the flow of new content and product related information, but the balance seems to have tipped in favour of the needs of the brands rather than the readers. The value of blogs was that they were independent. I hope you enjoy the blogs I've recommended :)
DeleteI enjoy reading beauty blogs because I learn a lot and I see great ideas as I'm not as fashionable myself. Thanks for sharing this. :)
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure :) If you've haven't come across these, I hope you enjoy them.
DeleteI love Sali Hughes and this book, you can tell she has such a passion for it #brilliantblogposts
ReplyDeleteShe's working on another book at the moment that's more product / brand focussed. It'll be interesting to see what that one's like :) Thank you for commenting and have a great week
DeleteThank you for listing my blog, Mrs Tubbs! I'm grateful and gratified that you have enjoyed reading (despite my having more champagne tastes!) and I hope not to fall into the trap of going too commercial :D
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting! :)
DeleteI tend not to have come across many beauty blogs. Pre children I think I would have been all over them, as I loved beauty products. Now I never buy any so I tend not to keep up with it all. #MMWBH
ReplyDeleteI think you often end up deciding what you're going to hold onto for grim death from your pre-child life when you have kids as evidence you were still you - and I chose lipstick and books. :)
DeleteYou could have a look at daughter Erin's blog which has taken a beauty direction recently https://groggits.wordpress.com You might even find a guest post from yours truly in a few days time.
ReplyDeleteGoing off to look now ... Thank you. If you fancy another guest posting gig, let me know
DeleteOh I love beauty blogs will check these out for sure. I am the same I don't wear much makeup but like to no more about it and cheaper or high depending on what I need for my own skin is best.
