Beauty. Detoxing the Stash. Again!

Friday, 12 February 2016

What again?!  Yes, again.  Even though I don't buy that much, I'm convinced it breeds when my back is turned.  It looks untidy and messy before I know it.  It was also a particularly good Christmas beauty product wise.

Beauty products

The first thing I did was gather everything together.  Anything empty, out of date or weird smelling got thrown away.  The rest was sorted into things I wanted to keep or pass on.
  • Be realistic.  There is only so much you can use at a time.  Anything that's not been touched in 6 months is unlikely to be used again.  If you have 5 very similar things, keep your favourite and lose the rest.
  • Organise.  I keep products in a wooden fruit bowl and mugs. These got a good clean.  I put a few things away to make things easier to find and less cluttered.  I'll rotate items so everything gets used and nothing forgotten.
  • Is it any good?!  If a product isn't very good, then re-purpose.  For example, that meh face-cream may work as body lotion.
  • Does it suit you?  It may look lovely in the shop or on your friend, but not on you.    It may not be suitable for the life you're leading. Get rid of it.  I gave up buying red lipstick when I decided most of them made me look scary.  I tossed the gel eyeliners because I am too shorted sighted to get them on fleck.  Ever.

The challenge.  The challenge is to ensure that I don't over buy and everything gets used:
  • Only buying new items when the old ones are completely used up.  A beauty, skincare and body-care spending ban!  Post to follow at some point.
  • Switch round the eye palettes each week so they all get a turn.
  • Wear a different lipstick each day.
  • Throw out mascara after 6 months.
  • Stick to tried and tested favourites so there's less mistakes / waste.
  • Cruelty free where possible.
  • Once I'm buying new stuff again, buy to replace.

Is this just me?!  Let me know in the comments.

There's a scary collection thats built up in my bathroom cabinets over the years. You've inspired me to start tossing it all! #PoCoLo

I really need to sort out my dressing table. I cleared it enough to dust it the other day, but that's as far as I got! I love that Dr Who set - looks really great on there! x #thelist

"I'm not buying another lipstick until this one's finished." -said no woman ever!
I agree with you. They breed! I stash them away to my sister or cousin. :)

I need to throw so much stuff out but my husband recently built a draw for my makeup desk so now I have SO much extra room that it would look weird if I threw stuff out ahahha! #justanotherlinky

Of course, if you threw out some of the stuff you need to throw out it could be replaced ... But I never said that! What a lovely thing for your husband to do

I had a big clear out a few months ago, but there are definitely some more things I could get rid of and might have another cull after reading this post. I feel pretty happy with the state of my cosmetics collection, I just need to make more of an effort to use it regularly! I love your idea to rotate your palettes, I might try something like this too :)

I so need to do this. I've got a drawer in my chest of drawers literally bursting full of make up and nail varnish. I do use the nail varnish but I only really wear make up if I'm going out for drinks or somewhere nice I don't bother on a daily basis so why I think I need so much is beyond me! #KCACOLS

I'm sure they breed too - and it's amazing how much free stuff some of the brands give away. I haven't bought a blusher or lipstick for a while. I read once - and I think it's sound advice - that the nearer a product goes to your eyes the more fastidious you should be about the length of time you use it. Thanks for linking up to #pocolo x

I was sure I have commented this post last week as I even shared it in Twitter and pinned it in Pinterest but I can't see my comment. Anyway, I will do it again. This is something that I need to do too as I have so much make up around. I need to organise it all and through away the things that I don't need any more. I was looking for a concealer the other day and I couldn't find any so I decided to check what I have and what I don't. I had some stuff that is very dry now that perhaps will need to be throwing away. You have great ideas here. Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS. I would love to see you back on Sat 27th Feb when the linky opens again, :-) x
