To quote Velma from Scooby Doo. A heroine for glasses wearers everywhere.
I've worn glasses for most of my life, apart from a brief flirtation with contacts. I rely on them totally and can't imagine life without them. I suspect it would involve more tripping over. I'm too squeamish for laser surgery. So glasses it is.
Pros
- Glasses are necessities not fashion statements.
- Glasses protect eyes from rain, bugs, random objects or poking fingers.
- They're like a security blanket that I can hide behind.
- Time off to go to the opticians.
- After cleaning, the world looks amazing rather than grubby or smeary.
- To make my lazy eye work better, I had to wear an eye patch when I was a child. Ripping off eye patches when growing up creates fashionably strong eyebrows. As well as a high pain threshold and a dislike of even the idea of waxing.
- Glasses are a one off expense. Contact lenses may be a monthly outgoing.
- Glasses come in all shapes and colours to suit any face structure, skin tone or outfit.
- Glasses are easier to find when you've put down than teeny tiny pieces of plastic. And easier to take on and off.
- People's reaction when they try on my glasses is hilarious. One of my eyes has reasonable vision, but the other is really short sighted.
- It's a free health check as some illnesses are picked up via eye tests. Optegra Eye Health Care did a survey on eye health in the UK, and turned their survey findings into an Infographic. The findings are pretty random, including a rather sobering one - 5% of people have difficulty seeing the car in front when they're driving.
- You can re-enact those, "But Miss Jones, you're beautiful ..." moments from Carry on Films.
Cons
- If the lens gets scratched, they need to be replaced.
- People can be mean to glasses wearers. B*stards. I'm glad the Tubblet has good eyesight. Although she can't find anything that she's lost even if it's right in front of her.
- They can be expensive. If special features like thinner lenses or varifocals are needed, even more so. (My next trip to the opticians is going to be hideous).
- Eyesight only tends to get worse as you get older. (Sorry!)
- They're easily lost and difficult to find. Panic!! I now put them in the same place every night. Lesson learnt.
- Falling asleep in them makes you think you're cured when you wake up. The disappointment! And you have marks on your face. (Now I'm a grown up, I don't this anymore. But it was a common experience when I was studying / staying out late on a Saturday).
- People want to try them on. But I need the darned things to see and do stuff! And they make rude comments about how short-sighted I am in one eye. Is outrage!
Do you wear glasses? What are your pros and cons?
Sharing with all these great Linkys
[Disclosure: I was asked to share an Infrographic by Optegra Eye Health in exchange for no money. So I have. Who can resist random facts like over half women surveyed don't take off their eye makeup at night]
I do wear glasses but mostly live in contact lenses. I just find glasses annoying as they can fall off, get steamed up etc. Only small irritations mind! I need to find a super stylish pair and then I'd wear them more I think x
ReplyDeleteI hate the fact they steam up, even when they've got the coating that's meant to stop them doing it. Really makes cooking a PITA. Thank you for commenting
DeleteI have to wear glasses now for reading, screen work etc and there is something super stylish about wearing them, even tho it's only for a short period of time!

There is! I couldn't image not wearing them. Thank you for commenting
DeleteI don't wear glasses. I have some for when I need to rest my eyes I think but I rarely wear them. I'm happy that my vision is good as it must be annoying to have to wear them all the time. :-) x

You get used to it. I've had glasses for so long now, I don't really think about it. Wake up, put them on ... Get ready for day. Thank you for commenting :)
DeleteI'd barely be able to see my hand in front of my face without my contacts or glasses. Its been so long I can barely remember how nice it must be to be able to just wake up, walk around and see whats around you
ReplyDeleteWeirdly, I can see better now than I used too ... But I still need specs. It would be great not to need them though!
DeleteI'm also too squeamish for laser surgery! I hate wearing glasses and from 17 I wore contact lenses all the time, except late night at home alone. But since the kids, I actually wear my glasses most of the time, and contacts just for special occasions, as it's less messing around & my eyes are often tired and sore! Also, whilst there is a down of the kids trying to take the glasses, it does stop some of the eye pokes I would otherwise get!
ReplyDeleteThe eye pokes are terrible! Small fingers are sharp!
DeleteHa ha. I take them back off to get dressed and most days loose them in the bed, not such a #coolmum!
ReplyDeleteI've done that. Fortunately, I've never laid on them. I suspect they wouldn't survive!
DeleteHi lovely,
ReplyDeleteMy three year old has worn glasses since she was 20 months. It's been a roller coaster (one of my most read blogs is all about it - do princesses wear glasses). They are always lost, forever breaking, and constantly filthy! She has asked lots of questions about why she needs them - but she is just the cutest thing with them :-) Thanks for sharing with #coolmumclub
Of course princess and princes need glasses! Off to investigate your post ... Thank you for commenting
DeleteI wear contacts, glasses at night, have done for years as you say it's a necessity. I would love laser eye surgery the amount I have spent on lenses over years I've probably paid twice over for it but I am just a little scared about committing to it! Thanks for linking up to the #bestandworst x
ReplyDeleteThe thought of someone mucking about with my eyes terrifies me which is why I've never done it. Glad I'm not the only one! Thank you for hosting
