Most of us create a skincare routine by copying our mum's, asking friends, talking to a beauty counter consultant or doing some research. Or a mixture of all of these. All good, but what products work for one person might not work for another so finding things you like and work can take a while. And there's always something new to try!
Today's post is a beginner's guide to creating a skincare routine that works for you. Think about:
- The amount of time you have
- Budget
- Your skin type
- Your skin care goals. This sounds w*nky, but all it means is what issues you want the products to tackle - lines and wrinkles, brightening or ...
- Ingredients. If you know your skin doesn't like alcohol or silicone, then avoid products that contain them. My skin is, fortunately, forgiving.
- Animal testing. EU law says that products sold here can't be tested on animals but many companies sell in China where animal testing is mandatory. I look for the Cruelty Free International mark. This is why you see so many items from Superdrug on the blog!
Basics:
- Makeup remover
- Cleanser
- Moisturiser - for day and night
- Eye cream
- SPF. (Yes, you do need a separate product. What's in your moisturiser or makeup isn't enough).
Extras:
- Oils
- Serums
- Face masks
- Toner
- Exfoliator
- Spot cream
It's best not to introduce too many new products at once otherwise you can't see what's working and what isn't. And you need to give things time. Miracle serums take a few weeks to work.
And why no wipes?! Because wipes are fine for taking makeup off when I'm rushed, but they don't give you a proper cleanse and my face looks grubby if I use them regularly. So that's why no wipes.
For further advice, these blogs are my go-tos:

For further advice, these blogs are my go-tos:
- British Beauty Blogger and London Beauty Queen. Jane and Haley feature a wide-range of products and can be relied upon for an honest review. Items come from a variety of sources and at all price points.
- Caroline Hirons. Caroline features more spendy products. Her argument is that you should be willing to spend the same on a cream as on a handbag or pair of shoes. But if you want no nonsense advice on skin concerns or techniques, then this is an amazing source.
Oh gosh! I wish I had time for all that! Not to mention money. My skincare routine is basically facial wipes and coconut oil. On the odd occasion i might treat my self to a face pack or something nice from lush but thats about it
ReplyDeleteIf it's working then go for it. The thing with skincare is that you don't have to spend much. Some of the Superdrug ranges are really cheap but perform really well. (They don't send me anything, I just think they're really good value for money!)
DeleteI'm terrible I found so many products upset my skin that I just shove on some moisturiser for eczema prone skin and hope for the best!Maybe it's time I made more effort x #bestandworst
ReplyDeleteIf you have eczema you need to be more careful though as the last thing you want is to make it worse. London Beauty Queen's boyfriend has it as well and she's got some really good posts about products to try. Thank you for commenting
DeleteI'm a total nightmare for not toning and using wipes. I mainly wash using a face wash in the bath and moisturise but I really need to think about wrinkles now I am over 30!! I think time and cash can be a factor but Christmas is coming. This will help! Thanks for linking with #bestandworst and see you soon x
ReplyDeleteThere are some great sets you could ask for as presents. :) Thank you for hosting and I'll see you next week :)
DeleteI didn't have much of a routine until recently. I've always struggled with creams for my skin, it is very sensitive. I've tried expensive moisturisers, I've tried cheap ones and they all made my skin itch. Then I happened to be bought Boots No7 moisturiser set for Christmas and decided to give it a go. It was brilliant and didn't make my face itch! Since then I use nothing but Boots products, I think they're best suited to my skin. :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard some raves about them, but never tried them. I'll add them to the wish list. Glad you found something that works well for your sensitive skin. Thanks for commenting
DeleteI have tried to stick to my regular skin care routine which includes most of the above but when I'm feeling utterly exhausted I turn to wipes and never feel clean! Thanks so much for linkingup to #coolmumclub x
ReplyDeleteI do that occasionally, but try and give my skin an extra clean the next day. Thank you for hosting and see you you next week :)
DeleteGreat advice and product tips. I have no clue what to do with my skin I take crappy care of it too and I really wish I had a better routine down and one I can stick with. I will regret it in my forties I know! Thank you for stopping by LTM and linking up to SWM. I hope to see you again tomorrow for another great round of #sharewithme
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting each week. Maybe I'll come up with some actual product recommendations as well as sometimes the most difficult thing is working out what to get!
DeleteSkincare can be super scary 'ey! Like WHERE do you start? It's all about the ingredients BUT they seem to be in GREEK! haha... i like that now companies will (bracket) the real name of an ingredient so you can actually see what is in the bottle!! Then it's just about learning which ingredients you don't want to use on your face!
