I love reading about makeup, skincare and beauty products. I like knowing what's available for purchase. Even if I have no intention of purchasing it ever.
I want to understand ingredients and the science bit as that is an indication of whether or not a product might work for me if I purchased it.
I like seeing what other people think of products. Just because. Even if I suspect they're making it all up in the hope of flogging me some over priced, essential oil-filled lard.
I try and sort the wheat from the chaff. There are blogs I read just because and then there are blogs that I take notice of. Here are a few of my reliable sources of information:
Most beauty books are light on information and picture heavy. This is the opposite. This has everything you need to know about the subject of beauty. From taking good care of your skin to using makeup to carry you through the best and worst of times via what ingredients actually do. And what they don't.
Written in a no nonsense, down to earth style, without trying to sell you anything. Hughes occasionally says, "I like blah blah for this ..." and I think, "Well I do / don't" and carry on reading.
I dip into this regularly when I want to know something or am looking for ideas for a beauty post. And I can read it on my Kindle. Hughes has her own blog and a regular column in The Guardian. (I rarely read those).
Beauty blogs are as much a part of the product marketing machine as ads, counters etc. I trust Haley at London Beauty Queen and Jane at British Beauty Blogger as they review products - from the cheapest to the most expensive - honestly. They also tell you if it's a PR sample, paid content or something they've bought themselves. They've saved me quite a bit of money over the years by helping me find cheaper, better alternatives to some of the more expensive things I used to buy. Whilst enabling me to spend some of the money saved on more expensive things. (Not entirely the plan!)
I also love ParisB over at My Woman Stuff. Whilst she only features premium products, her writing is amazing, her post titles never fail to make me smile and she seems like a lovely person. I don't think you can fake it online. Your real self always leaks out eventually. She also has the best bags.
