I first saw U2 at Greenbelt in 1981. They’d just released their first album, Boy, were over in the UK doing the festivals, wanted to add Greenbelt to the list so rang up and asked if they could play.
Greenbelt's first response was: “No, we’ve never heard of you – and we can’t squeeze you in anyway.” Greenbelt eventually gave in and they played a 20 minute set early in the evening. The majority of the audience agreed with Greenbelt's first response and greeted them with bemusement. Apart from a few of us who insisted they were brilliant, destined for better things and got rather over-excited.
Now, of course, the number of people who claim to have seen U2 at Greenbelt would fill Wembley Stadium several times over. But I was there.
Between us, Rev T and I have seen every U2 tour since Joshua Tree. We've never been disappointed.
